The LibArts Questionnaire
Who are your favourite artist?
It’s almost impossible for me to choose favourites, but for argument’s sake Lewis Hine isn’t a bad one to go for, and not just because we share a name.
What inspires you?
Probably the deluded idea that the world can be a better place.
What is your favourite image?
I can look at Paul Strand’s ‘Blind Woman’ for hours. It’s not a comfortable photograph to look at, but it is one that provokes so many thoughts and feelings, which I think is more important.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Endless free time.
What is your greatest fear?
Lacking inspiration, or worse, having the inspiration for something but no outlet for it.
A note from the Editor:
While putting together the information for this page, we came across two projects on Lewis’s website that we’d like to highlight – both of them are worth a visit:
1. The Memory of History
While individual nations are built on a collective memory of the past, the European Union is a community of nations built on collective amnesia. Countries joining the Union over the past two decades traded their memories of past European rivalries, wars and genocide for prosperity, but now the boom times are over, the past is re-emerging.
2. The Camera Obscured
The Camera Obscured is a response to the private security guards of the city of London, who have a reputation for aggressively and sometimes illegally preventing the taking of photographs near the buildings they ward. When asked to explain their behaviour they often invoke spurious pretexts like ‘counter-terrorism’ or simply attempt to intimidate their challengers.
